Kesennuma City and Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology Collaborative Project ““Living with the Sea” Continuous Fisheries Seminar” 12th season 3rd session will be held

 Our university concluded a partnership agreement with Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture at the end of 23, and has implemented various initiatives until now. Starting in May of the following year, we have been holding the ``Umi to Ikiru'' Series of Fisheries Seminars about five times a year for fishermen and fisheries-related businesses.

OverviewThis presentation will report on recent fishing trends in the Pacific Ocean and resource trends based on the latest resource assessments. While the central and western Pacific recorded record catches in 2024, unprecedentedly poor catches were observed in the waters around Japan in 2025. This presentation will examine the factors behind these phenomena and provide an overview of recent research findings regarding the ecology of skipjack tuna.

Lecturer's background Born in Hokkaido in 1972. After graduating from the Faculty of Fisheries, Hokkaido University, he obtained a PhD in Fisheries Science from the Graduate School of Fisheries Sciences, Hokkaido University. After serving as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Hawaii, he worked at the Far Seas Fisheries Research Institute, the International Fisheries Resources Research Institute, and the Fisheries Resources Research Institute, where he was engaged in research on resource assessment and resource dynamics of skipjack tuna and albacore tuna. He served as a research manager in the Research Guidance Division of the Fisheries Agency's Aquaculture Promotion Department, and assumed his current position in August 2022.
